Poems and Dreams  opal  29 May 08 4:56AM Thread Closed

I heard a scientific bod claim recently that the average human dream only lasts 2 or 3 seconds. I was a bit surprised because the dreams I have are often so vivid they seem like epics. I began to wonder if poets should be trying to verbalise these 2 or 3 second epics as we try to capture the essence of so many snippets of life? I know of one poet who believed dreams to have their own syntax which was just as valid as that of so-called 'waking life' and wrote the essence of them as soon as she woke up. I'm not sure about this, though she was undoubtedly a talented poet. What does everyone here think?

what was the question -- "wonder if poets"?

poets should be trying to verbalise what difference does it make why or of what

why 'what difference does it make?' chuckles. I'm not sure if I see poems as having to take that route all the time - whaddayou think?

sorry

should be a period after verbalising

i guess i think poets should be writing anything for whatever reason

poets verbalising period

a dream is just as good fodder maybe better as anything else

the subconscious perhaps comes up with better poems than the alert and aware mind?

i pretty much never remember my dreams so i'm left to write about poop a lot of the time

;)

Opal, I studied dreams when I was in college, read every book in the library about it.  The studies then showed that as you get farther into your sleep cycles, the longer your dreams last.  2-3 seconds does not seem right to me at all.

I used to write down my dreams in detail.  Some of them were quite amazing but I don't think I ever wrote a poem about them.  That's an interesting idea, though.

Dreams are like Poetry;
Some are wishes, some are fears,
While but a few are prophecy!
Some are laughter, some are tears,
While some are mere philosophy!

Some writers write to be mean and right,
Others to be liked, feel they belong;
Then there is the Shiva-Grace; a destroyer,
a creator, a Diva of change!
An urge of Nature in lyrical song!

She is Mystic, language her crucible
igniting Grace to action.
no past compels, nor future beckons!
Her dreams of light, this second sight
that comes of longing in the night!

Alchemia - the goddess of poetic dreams - to have this revealed in 2-3 seconds would be some revelation.
