Ok, about that mother's love thing. Do parents believe that their kids are separate beings or actual extensions of themselves. For example a creature that looks like me and behaves like me, is me and hence I have the right to control every aspect of its life and if it tries to break through this web of control I try to hold on tighter. So hypothetically its as if the parent is loving himself, a narcissitic perception...maybe, but it could explain why many parents are just plain weird when it comes to their kids. In that case loving oneself, is not really love, it's more of self preservation.
Or better yet a mother loves her child because he/she/it is the only chance she has of perpetuating her genetic material into a world that's governed by a simple principle;
she will eventually die and the only chance she has of immortality is the creation of a strong semi-similiar being to take her place and then she will live on through him.
Again, this is just a theory.
Animals are a tricky affair, because we can't be sure if they love or not? They can stick around, show loyalty, and maybe on some occasions show sadness at the loss of a partner........but is that love? or is it just programmed emotions? On a more scientific level love is dopamine released on being stimulation by a specific image, person etc........hence is love a conditioned response. Are we better than a robot?
It's a very very complex subject that digs deep into the core foundation of what is essentially human. I truly believe that love is a purely human emotion and I for one believe in love at first sight. Still waiting for it though.

See? All the definitions lead to more questions. As a mother, I can say that my children still charm me as separate beings. From birth, every child is unique in the world. Even twins have some differences that make them special. Parents do not own their children, children own their parents, that's what I believe. As old as they get, they have rights to us. As old as we are, we do not have rights to them or their lives.
I've had pets and I know that they exhibit behavior I would call love. They show affection to some and not to others so they do discriminate in their willingness to share themselves.
It IS complex, isn't that the fun part? Nothing easily explained is very interesting to me.
I also believe it's chemical based. That's another question that I love to think about - what is real about our lives and what is only a chemical illusion? Another question that can't be 100% answered, especially since doctors are trying to figure out how people who have 'died' are still creating memories. It's not in the brain, the brain waves are flat. Where is out of body experience coming from and how can memories be laid down in brain synapses if that brain is totally without power?
Could keep us all busy for a lifetime, trying to chase it down.

Love is a verb. A word that coats the action. It makes everything in 3D.
