Just curious if the West Nile Virus is killing birds where everyone on PC lives. I counted 3 dead Crows yesterday while I was walking at work - one more was sick last night, dead this morning.
Are you all seeing dead Crows? They are the sentinel bird for the virus. We all need to be more careful to prevent getting mosquito bites, especially if you are seeing a lot of dead birds in your area. We have a call center to report them, especially if they are dying in clusters. Our Vector control comes to check for mosquitos, leaves handouts for home owners about leaving standing water around, even a pet's dish! Some people aren't into cleaning pet dishes often enough.
Let's all be careful this WNV season, which runs June to October.

The UK has had a few instances of the 'Bird Flu' virus, Avian Influenza, the A type, but due to the fears brought about by the previous situations such as the Mad Cow infections and more recently the Foot and Mouth outbreaks the Government dept for such things, DEFRA, has pretty much been on full alert and jumped on any recorded instances very very quickly.
Though they are still predicting a Pandemic which wont be as easily contained as a few localised dead bird events, and even tranferance to humans with will potentially kill many.
So far we have very little in the way of wild or domesticated fowl/birds which have been affected... mainly because of the high state of alert here.
Plus we are an island and can 'contain' more easily than say a series of inland and sea fronted states with many many border/boundary crossings, all with varying degrees and differences in regulation control of the movement of animal stock.

That's interesting, Mongrol. Don't birds manage to circumvent the fact that you are an island? I just bagged 3 dead Crows, to await the person to transport them to the lab. I expect more will die but I'm not going to bag any more, they'll have enough evidence to sound an alert for mosquito control.
I can still hear baby Crows calling - I hope it wasn't their parents who caught the virus. Yes, it can transfer to humans but not from birds, yet. The book I just finished reading, "Good Germs, Bad Germs - Health and Survival in a Bacterial World," was interesting, a lot of info about how bacteria and viruses can combine parts and mutate into something that can nullify our antibiotics. It's very cool and more than a little frightening.

Typical Mongrol nonsense, does he have a brain at all.
Does he imagine that the sea birds, which flock on to British farms and fields, are not capable of flocking onto continental farms and fields just as easily and vice versa?
Fowl pest is one disease, which is obviously carried on the webbed feet of visiting sea birds. Other diseases could quite easily be transmitted by the same means
Mongrol is a total moron preaching to the brain dead...

What the moron above does not take into consideration. which is absolutely typical of the moron behind the (lol) man is that being an island while you may not be able to stop the travel of all kinds of birds from all over the world, it can be observed, reported, localised and contained pretty quickly, as the mechanisms for this kind of containment procedure are firmly in place... hence the mention of BSE (Mad Cow) and Foot and Mouth, being examples of how much experience the Government departments have with such things.
There was no mention of being able to halt the free flight of birds to and from this island.
If the absurd idiot cared to digest the information properly instead of lamely attempting to strike out with a limp and quite ineffective slap.... then all the better for him/her/it....
As for preaching to the brain dead... welcome to the congregation, please Mr. B Dead, take a pew.

How interesting, first we have mongrol that self-professed expert in poetry giving us his worthless advice on the art of poetic construction.
Next, we have mongrol giving his amateur opinion on the culture of wild fungi, possibly he indulged in one too many magic mushrooms at the time.
However, low and behold, mongrol now ventures forth in the field of veterinary science, ever prepared to pass on his worthless knowledge to those that know no better.
I wonder what tasty morsel of information mongrol will bring forth next to whet the appetite of the bored residents of PC.

Well that should make mongrol’s day, the professed love of a larrylark. I wonder if mongrol can fly into trees too.
It would be nice to see a picture of the two little love birds sitting on a branch spouting love sonnets to each other.
Shouldn’t larry be at home washing dishes or something?

What depths of depredation will a writer sink too, in order secure a kind word on their work?
There is not a lot activity on this site lately. Where have all the good poets gone?
Let us all tell mongrol how wonderful he is; he is bound to believe it.
He and Isabelle can twitter on through the night, about their crow collecting experiences.
