well, overrated is even a sort of an understatement,
just like saying Jimi Hendrix is The guitar-gawd when
he actually is Gawd; Kurt Cobain [on behalf of Nirvana]
is simply Jimi's alter-ego.
so there i said it.

Jimmy, while good, is not the end all/be all in the guitar world my friend. Nowhere near that. Just the other day, I saw a local guy in Richmond who would have wiped the floor with Jimmy. In terms of talent and composition. And I don't even know his name.
But if you want some names:
Joe Satriani
Clapton
Steve Vai
Alex Lifeson
Mustaine
Herman Li
Josh Homme
Prince
John Frusciante
Jason Becker
B.B. King
Darun Malakian
Michael Angelo Batio
And of course, SVR.
I'll even throw the Malm in there, even If I do think he's the most pretentious guitarist I've ever heard.

These aren't all my favorite bands, but they're the ones that have put on the best shows:
The Blood Brothers
The Eagles of Death Metal
The Red Hot Chili Peppers
Metric
The Rock 'n Roll Soldiers
The Presidents of the United States of America
The Gossip
The Donnas
There are some bands that I really like on CD but their shows were less than impressive.
I saw Death Cab for Cutie about four years ago. I like them a bit now but I didn't like them back then. They put on a HORRIBLE show and spent more time ranting about politiccs than playing music. I also had about three or four screaming girls try to kill me to get closer to them. People were moshing, it was aweful, I mean I don't know how the hell you would mosh at Death Cab or why you would want to, bu it was happening. Alright, sorry, that was a bit of a rant there.

i can even throw in that kid in August Rush --
i think that's his name, too.
actually, a lot of other names and unsung heroes but
didn't the G3 -- Steve and Joe with Yngwie, Eric, et al --
always pay homage to good ol' Jimi?
youtube already has a whole bunch of guitar wonders
from 5-, 6- or 7-yr olds to any old fart imaginable but
just think about the profound, lasting effect -- if any --
they have or the change they effected on the face/mind
of rock/music.
no one can ever do an instrumental cover of Born Under
A Bad Sign better than Jimi, if you ask me.
not even Michaelangelo, the all-hands-all-at-once,
ambidextrous guitar player.

If you guys like a real guitarist that totally shreds and writes actually pop songs (and she's a girl), I wholeheartedly recommend Marnie Stern's album "In Advance of the Broken Arm." She's totally amazing, I love her to death, and I'm totally stoked about her other album which is coming out this year. I am including a youtube link so you can see the depths to which she shreds. -Joey's Last Nerve

haha, the only concerts I've ever been to are the local outdoor community concert that runs different acts throughout the summer, as well as those of a local band [Vultures of Pop Culture] who happen to be pretty damn good for a high school band. I now volunteer at the community concert as an usher, so I'll be there twice a week until August. I'll let you know if any of the acts are good :)
[for more info on the one band, see the poem by Epicpants: I think it's either called "Vultures of Pop Culture" or "Carnival Fun"].

I like Herman Li, he's very funny. You forgot Buckethead - unless you listed him with his real name which I'm not aware of. Steve Vai is weird...

lots of names are missing from that list. notably, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck.
