altruism is often ego gratification in disguise, with the carrot being an afterlife with plenty to go around and a headstone with heroic conceits engraved for the living believers -- nevertheless even animals practice forms of altruism such as monkeys who will assist an old Monkey who can't get around anymore with mouthfuls of water or a push up the tree for a nit picking session -- God has no Religion and Religion has no God -- it cannot be an iconic thing as that's just another form and ritual where someone says only through me can you get there -- lies and illusions of Priests and back seat preachers who are in it for the carrot and oh so willing to use the stick for their greater good!

eh, sometimes, but not always (glad you wrote 'often'). there is a form of pure altruism in humans that has nothing whatsoever to do with the 'light'.
isn't there a saying, 'it is better to believe and be disappointed, then to not believe and be disappointed"?
i say, to each his own. whatever brings a smile to your heart:)

there are a lotta old sayings and believers really like that but I would rather lick honey from the edge of Occam's Razor than believe in anything someone tells me is true Carte Blanche -- tunnel vision is a result of loneliness and desperation, fears and worries, that linear based propaganda firing neurons in your left brain saying you gotta believe in me ( the I ) -- I believe nothing, not even myself, nevertheless I do dance and play in Truth, that Beautiful way where sooth sayings come with glee so merrily -- change is the only thing that is real and if you wanna avoid disappointment than you have to have no expectations at all -- Natural reality flows along like a song with a beat that moves your feet to the Sea that roiling Sea ever aching for the Sky like me
