LOL -- it's not a chatroom, '94 -- we post here about the general questions, even when the other joe is just being insulting -- it's all about poetry here. the unknown just voiced a radical challenge, if you'll pick up on it: he's saying that a critique of his work worked to make him doubt himself, but now that he's seen what the critic really 'looks' like he can regain his sense of perspective. which is good and maybe looks like the start of a poem, but his prose is reaally rattty.
so, '94, how honest should the critic be? is this play-nice space, and we have to reword a harsh crit into a soft 'this is good'? but, isn't it so that it's not really about the poet himself here but about poetry? and writing a crit of a poem -- isn't it really writing a crit on poetry itself? and that's a topic that's very alive, for poets.

that post i made was sarcasm.
the critic should be as honest as possible
WITHOUT belittling the author of the piece.
harsh crit
and harsh insults
are different
harsh crit
in my opinion
is a critique that tears apart an entire poem and examines it from its very roots.
harsh insults
don't get anyone anywhere
and are ultimately
not about poetry.
no one has to "play nice"
all they need to do is focus.

i will say this about the unknowns.
they are very similar to the anonymous voice in a darkened theater shouting:
"get off the fucking stage!"
not always polite, or correct, often infuriating, and sometimes baffling.
however there are truths in what they say, that sometimes should and need to be heeded.
what do i know?! i usually wait for the tomatoes(that way i can make lemonade!)
