In the Gloomy Onset of Dusk
eyeswideshut

we found ourselves in the last place we’d looked
 1
which wasn’t far from here
 2

and when the repercussions of time
 3
caught on our tail
 4
we fled like ants
 5
stumbling back to the colony
 6
oblivious and ostracized
 7

or so we thought
 8

but as we crawled out of the hive
 9
scrabbling, grunting, clawing
 10
heaving ourselves onto the desolate, emaciated landscape
 11
it was not our foes who stood as gods before us
 12

only silence
 13

an awful, deafening silence
