Blood spills as a muted scream echoes across the room. | 1 |
A scream that signifies the end of a life. | 2 |
I hear this shriek, as I am escorted to my table. | 3 |
| |
Surrounded by steak and chicken wings, the scream grows louder. | 4 |
"I'll have a salad! No ham! No bacon!" I tell the waiter. | 5 |
I will not be the cause of the scream that haunts me. | 6 |
| |
I survey the bloodlust that surrounds me. | 7 |
Despicable carnivores. | 8 |
I watch, as teeth tear into flesh, | 9 |
And expressions of delight appear on the faces of murderers. | 10 |
They care not for the creature they have just devoured. | 11 |
| |
My salad arrives. | 12 |
Fresh leaves wrapped around tender vegetables. | 13 |
Sprinkles of cheese enveloped in Ranch Dressing. | 14 |
This, is a meal! | 15 |
A meal I can proudly devour. | 16 |
A meal that will keep my soul free of guilt. | 17 |
| |
And then. I see it. | 18 |
| |
Hidden to me until now, tucked under a stray leaf, | 19 |
Plastered to the plate by a layer of dressing it sits. | 20 |
My salad has been tainted. | 21 |
By a bacon bit. | 22 |
| |
My shout of disgust generates no response. | 23 |
A few heads turn but after seeing no real excitement, | 24 |
They turn back to their meals. | 25 |
Steaks and chicken wings. | 26 |
| |
The scream returns. | 27 |
It fills my head, sending shivers through my body. | 28 |
I feel my body shake and convulse. | 29 |
Terror rips through my soul. | 30 |
| |
And then. | 31 |
The scream is no more. | 32 |
| |
Instead it is replaced by a voice. | 33 |
Haunting, thin and whispery. | 34 |
It speaks to me. | 35 |
| |
"Meat is delicious." | 36 |
| |
My mind reels as I stare at the small scrap of bacon on my plate. | 37 |
I feel sick as curiousity creeps into my head. | 38 |
"Delicious?" | 39 |
"Impossible!" | 40 |
| |
I wait for the scream to return. | 41 |
My thoughts of treason will surely spur its terror. | 42 |
But it remains dormant. | 43 |
And I feel my curiousity ripen. | 44 |
| |
Slowly, I pick up the piece of flash that happened upon my dish. | 45 |
I tell myself to put it down, | 46 |
But the voice speaks to me again, louder this time. | 47 |
| |
"Meat is delicious!" | 48 |
| |
The voice, accompanied by my curiosity, destroys my judgement. | 49 |
I take the plunge. | 50 |
I allow my desire to take over. | 51 |
I begin to chew. | 52 |
| |
Before charred flesh even reaches my lips, I lust for more. | 53 |
I have reached the apex of my being. | 54 |
Suddenly I am starved for meat! | 55 |
My only need is to devour flesh! | 56 |
| |
The scream is but a memory now. | 57 |
It is replaced by desire. | 58 |
I rip the chicken wing out of the hand of my neighbor. | 59 |
And as I devour the crunchy coating covering the flesh, I yell: | 60 |
| |
"MEAT IS DELICIOUS!" | 61 |
