In Some Places Its Still Considered Homicide
dmartin

I bought a round-trip ticket
 1
for a one way flight, and
 2
couldn't sit still
 3
the whole way to chicago.
 4

I spent months there,
 5
and sent letters to you
 6
about how I'd never had
 7
so much fun, about
 8
how the city night
 9
lit up like your eyes
 10
the first night we met
 11
at the fair Augusts ago.
 12

I signed them
 13
better off without you,
 14
knowing all too well
 15
this was as empty as
 16
a maple tree in late November.
 17
But when that summer ended,
 18
I headed home,
 19
back to being comfortable.
 20

When I knocked, he answered
 21
and suddenly the season changed.
 22
I walked away as the door creaked shut,
 23
an era closed forever in a casket.
