| we reported the synthesis of element 118 | 1 |
in the (lead-krypton) reaction based upon | 2 |
the observation of three decay chains, | 3 |
each consisting of an implanted heavy atom | 4 |
and six sequential high-energy alpha decays, | 5 |
correlated in time and position. | 6 |
| |
Prompted by the absence | 7 |
of similar decay chains | 8 |
in subsequent experiments, we | 9 |
(along with independent experts) re- | 10 |
analyzed the primary data files | 11 |
from our 1999 experiments. | 12 |
| |
Based on these re- | 13 |
analyses, we | 14 |
conclude that the three | 15 |
reported chains are not in the 1999 data. | 16 |
| |
We retract our published claim | 17 |

i don't understand the "poem" part of this. — username
but then again, you always do stuff like this and you're smarter than me... so, umm, just explain? — username
same here.. missing poetic aspect. — mtw
hehe, i like it! the poem part for me is in that it is found, how it's pointing out the humor in technical writing...right? — britta
I see the poetry in this, but then again, I read a lot of scientific papers. It's the same as the poetry of a perfect souffle, the rhythm of the sprinklers on campus, or a James Bond movie...eye of the beholder, etc.
I'd be more impressed if you wrote it yourself, though. — justagirl
the difference between this and the souffle, is that this is also an admission of an outright fraudulent claim, and a pretty big one too. these guys told the world they had created a new element, a new form of matter that has never before existed. reality, manmade with pride, the heaviest atom yet. but no one else could duplicate the feat. so they had to admit that perhaps they hadnt really done it. but this admission is worded simultaneously is a proud/scientific/shamed/and poetic way. and it stuck out to me. — gnormal
great 10 out of from blister — unknown
*shudder* I hate this. I'm in Chem 118, and failing. Bad ass memories. You have ruined my night. Thank you. =P — wendz
