home in time for the rain

the sweetness of this night is calling
and i know now why you are bound so tightly to walking away,
with one hand holding on to this moment,
one heart beating your blood into the next and further away from me
it would be impossible for you to stay.
bitterness and resentment reside here in the space between us,
leaking from time past, wounds long ago inflicted by thoughtless  love
eating away at these fragile bonds,
but in these last few breaths we will share together,
allow the good intentions to envelop you just as the darkness does
and know that my hopes for you have never been so high.
