I’d Like To Say I Ran For Three (Or Why Gray Whales Are Better Than Me)

I saw the spine arise.  The shape of its lines can ride the
waves. On shore was heard sound spurt spray. I began to run.
One mile. Sun gold sand gold sea silver whale blue.
Two. How to keep pace with a beast of such space
it idles on ocean floors? For creatures of similar features
I clutched at ribs, bowed my head. It sank back down
and off it sped. I could only stand and catch my breath.
