Edge Of Sleep

That final elusive thought,
caught in those moments before sleep
leaves no clue,
as light filters through shades of what remains
of the day.
Do not pursue those channels of stale air
or chase the random dizziness of night’s flight.
You are subsumed
into the subdued glow of a bedside radio light.
The shipping forecast has merged
into a final bulletin from the world,
and it never seems right out there.
I swear I heard a distant cry.
Or maybe just a lullaby.
Both dismissed
